Recruiting College Players 101

Honestly speaking, Season 84 might be a lost cause for UST and UE but Season 85 is just around the corner so here is a recruitment guide. First stop, get blue chip players. Then go halfway around the world to get an import student. It's like personalization when you go house to house. Of course they have worked to get the players they have now but our aim is to get to the next level. The same goes for the rest of the UAAP teams and other leagues.

Happy April Fool's Day!

Sherwin Concepcion's Season-High 25 Points Lifts UST Over UE

Sherwin Concepcion's Season-High 25 Points Lifts UST Over UE

Sherwin Concepcion scored season-high 25 points, also his career-high as the UST Growling Tigers pounced on a listless UE Red Warriors late in the 4th quarter to win 74-62. The Tigers dropped a 12-0 bomb with the game tied at 62-all, 2-1/2 minutes left in the game clock for the final score that saw a see-saw battle come to a anti-climactic conclusion. UE and UST played helter-skelter basketball throughout the game not allowing each other to pull away. In fact, there were 14 lead changes and 7 tied scores. UE led at the start 6-0 but it looks like UST has the better talent in terms of size and skill. One can sense their confidence even when the Warriors were hanging tough with Clint Escamis, Kris Pagsanjan and acrobatic Aurin Catacutan. UST had a 25-24 lead in the first quarter who had Concepcion and Bryan Santos providing the firepower. They also might have discovered a gem in daredevil Christian Manaytay. The lead swung to UE 39-36 at the half. Then its Nic Cabanero's turn for UST to contribute. The 3rd quarter finished at 50-all, preparing the stage for a 62-all deadlock that went UST's way. Concepcion led all scorers with 25 points, followed by Manaytay 12, Cabanero 12 and Santos 10. For UE Catacutan scored 17 points, Pagsanjan 10 and Escamis 9. In retrospect, one might wonder how Season 84 might have been for UST if they had an import.

Ricci Rivero Flies High As UP Shackles NU

Ricci Rivero Flies High As UP Shackles NU

Ricci Rivero had all-game brilliance as UP beats NU 80-70. The high-flying Rivero broke down the defense of his guards with his Pete Maravich-esque dribbling skills scoring 19 points while adding 3 boards, 4 dimes, 2 steals and 1 block. NU had an ideal start at 6-0 but UP quickly caught up with them. UP still trailed 13-14 through 3-1/2 minutes left in the first quarter when Jonas Tibayan and a two point Guard combo of Ernest Felicilda and Steve Nash Enriquez combined to make it a 25-20 lead for NU going to the second quarter. So this was when Rivero went on a scoring spree making flashy layups as the Fighting Maroons push the ball hard. Terrence Fortea and Joel Cagulangan took advantage of the short guards of NU and shot over them. UP has now taken the lead with 13-2 run at 40-34. However baskets from Michael Malonzo and Enriquez cut the lead at halftime buzzer 42-39. It was a close 3rd quarter with NU getting the lead at 49-44 with John Lloyd Clemente and Malonzo towing the Bulldogs. UP had a finishing kick from Carl Tamayo, CJ Cansino and Zavier Lucero, they lead at halftime 55-53. Rivero shoots a 3, Lucero hits a jumper, Rivero scores on a drive and James Spencer hits a jumpshot as the Maroons start the 4th quarter with an 11-0 blast making the score 66-53 in favor of UP. Mahinay stops the bleeding while John Galinato and Reyland Torres contributes to plug away at the lead, the score now 68-60 UP leads with time winding down 5 minutes left in the game. UP defense held down NU just keeping them at bay and at 74-67 with 3 minutes left, Felicilda of NU was assessed a flagrant foul and that took out the fight from NU. UP ices the game at 80-70. Rivero paced the Maroons with 19, Tamayo 13 and Cagulangan. The Bulldogs had Malonzo scoring 11, Torres 10 and Clemente 9. Imports were rather non-existent in this game. NU's Issa Gaye was out from an injury while UP's Mallick Diouf received little playing time.

Justine Baltazar Shows Arsenal In La Salle Win Versus FEU

Justine Baltazar Shows Arsenal In La Salle Win Versus FEU

Justine Baltazar was posting up, shooting the 3s, running the break and most importantly he did it in the 4th quarter when FEU was caught up with La Salle at 61 then subsequently pulled away with a 14-4 backbreakef. Baltazar subtly filled the stat sheet with 20 points, 11 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals and 1 block. La Salle got into a nice rhythm early racing to an 8-1 lead before FEU tied it up at 8-all and they were matching shots since. FEU led after the first quarter 18-17 with Brandrey Bienes finding his range. Mark Nonoy's back to back 3s and Michael Phillips' post play made it 29-22 La Salle only to be countered by RJ Abarrientos and Emman Ojuola to tie the score 32-all at half-time. It was a close 3rd quarter where there were ties and several lead changes. This time it was Cyrus Austria, Deschon Winston and Evan Nelle vs Abarrientos, LJ Gonzales and Sandagon. However La Salle's 3-point shooting duo Baltazar and Nonoy from 30 feet Sparks a 9-0 run trailing 49-50 to leading 58-50 after 3 quarters. FEU had a spirited run in the 4th quarter tying the game at 61-all with 6 minutes left. La Salle's running game was worked giving them mismatches and open looks. It was Balti time in the clutch who scored 7 points in this stretch and with the help of Kurt Lojera La Salle takes the game 75-65. Adding the total for La Salle were Nonoy with 17 points and Lojera 10. FEU's Gonzales had 17 points, Ojuola 13, Abarrientos 9 and Bienes 9.

With La Salle running on the break, it created mismatches and open looks.for La Sal

Ange Kouame Double-Double Anchors Ateneo Rout ot Adamson

Ange Kouame Double-Double Anchors Ateneo Rout of Adamson

Ange Kouame was a steady presence inside with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 1 block to earn the Best Player of the game as Ateneo trounced Adamson 78-43. It was an auspicious start for Ateneo as they ran down the shotclock with their set plays opting to slow down the game rather than run with Adamson which could have favored the latter. As such Jerom Lastimosa and the Soaring Falcons were clipped as the Blue Eagles' good transition defense prevented easy layups. They also shut them down in the interior as Kouame was changing shots. The Eagles also have good footwork enabling honest defense. Ateneo slowly breaks away from Adamson with Rafael Verano scoring from defensive stops, they lead Adamson in the first quarter 17-8. They then blitzed Adamson with hits from Tyler Tio, Jose Mendoza and Chris Koon. With the attention on Dave Ildefonso, Ateneo's bench responded magnificently. In stark contrast there was no one stepping up from Adamson, not even import Lenda Douanga can provide that scoring nor Didat Hanapi their opening day topscorer. And so Ateneo built a 36-13 lead in the second quarter only to have the lead cut 36-24 Adamson with an 11-0 run at the half when Douanga came alive. Adamson made it a 15-0 run carrying over to the third quarter 36-28 until a Tyler Tio 3 stopped the rally. Kouame again asserted his supremacy inside and anchored the inside outside game, the lead now at 54-30. With about 7 minutes in the game Ateneo emptied it's bench in the landslide win leading as much as 29 points at 63-37. The bench mobs led by Fortskie Padrigao for Ateneo battle it out for the final score 78-47. Ateneo boxscores reads Koaume 13, Tio 9, Koon 9 and  3 players had 8. Dave Ildefonso only had  6. Adamson topscorers were Keith Zaldivar and Douanga with only 6 each. Lastimosa can only manage 4.

Basic Positions In Basketball

Basic Positions In Basketball

Point Guard

The Point Guard (PG) brings down the ball and facilitate the offense or make plays that give them points. In other words, the PG should know the tendencies of his players on the court. You can worry about the tendencies of opposing players later. So aside from making plays, the PG should score and defend. Luka Doncic is my prototype although PGs don't have to be 6'8". He Shoots 3s with ease because of mismatches and he offsets speed of opposing players with technique, timing and size.

Shooting Guard

The Shooting Guard (SG) usually is the main scorer because he gets all the open shots and plays. He gets open by moving around screens or breaking down defenses one on one. He also helps the PG in handling the ball and making plays. I like Mike Miller in this position because he is a deadshot from 3. On defense he can body up the opposing player. So yeah you have to at least outscore your match-up.

Small Forward

The Small Forward (SF) does a little bit of everything - dribbling, scoring, rebounding, defending and assisting. Scottie Pippen is a trailbrazer in SFs who can dribble the ball like a guard. It's the reason he invented the position of Point Forward. He also shoots the 3-ball, moves without the ball well and a roamer on defense.

Power Forward

The Power Forward (PF) mans one of the post spots under the basket. The PF should be a good rebounder and a good post defender. However the times have changed and the game has changed. PFs like Kevin Love shoot the 3s that opposing PFs extend their defense. Love rebounds the ball well because despite his 6'8" height, his bulk makes him immoveable at the paint so he gets good positions. His career-high in rebounds is more than 40 rebounds in a game.

Center

The Center (C) is opposite the PF on the other post and usually the tallest in the team so he gets the points inside. He also grabs the rebounds and the last line of defense. Hakeem Olajuwon has only 4 moves but he fakes so the shots so it is more like 8 moves.

So my dream team can score and defend. Remember to win a basketball game you only have to outscore your opponent. Your player might not be that good on defense but he can score. You can assign him to a terrible shooter. Yep do your scouting.

Zavier Lucero Dominates The Paint As UP Overwhelms UST

Zavier Lucero Dominates The Paint As UP Overwhelms UST

Zavier Lucero and the UP Fighting Maroons bucked a lackluster first half trailing the UST Growling Tigers 46-48 and played with gusto in the second half to engineer a 17-point turnaround in the 3rd quarter 78-63 enroute to a 98-78 romp. Lucero was unstoppable making 9 of 10 shots inside the paint and collaring 8 rebounds.  The Tigers are playing without an import so they are not much of an opponent for the highly-touted Maroons. Or so it seemed. UST took the fight to UP in the first half even leading as much as 18-7 in the first quarter and 39-27 in the second quarter with Sherwin Concepcion hitting 4 3s ably assisted by Nicael Cabanero, Miguel Pangilinan and Joshua Fontanilla. Lucero kept plugging away at the lead challenging the small UST frontcourt and scoring on easy layups and post-up plays. Another energy guy James Spencer was all around. Ricci Rivero and Carl Tamayo were slowly getting into game shape. Rivero leads the Maroons scoring with 19 points, Lucero 18, Tamayo 18 and Spencer 11. Concepcion paced the Tigers with 19 points while Fontanilla had 17, Cabanero 16 and Pangilinan 13.

Speedster Mark Nonoy Makes Vital Plays In La Salle Win Over NU 59-55

Speedster Mark Nonoy Makes Vital Plays In La Salle Win Over NU 59-55

Mark Nonoy was a blur in both ends of the court and outclassed opposing guards in the La Salle win over NU. Nonoy hits a crucial 3 making the score 56-49 in favor of the Green Archers with 3-1/2 minutes left in the game. Both teams came up empty after until a basket from NU makes the game closer 56-52 with time winding down 39 seconds. Justine Baltazar puts away the game with a 3-point play and Joson of NU hits for the final count 59-55. It was a defense-oriented game for both teams as their zones and double-teams describe the game. NU led at the start 10-3 with Antonio Joson, Jake Figueroa and their outside sniping. Sluggish La Salle offense slowly hummed with Kurt Lojera coming alive, they wrestled the lead 19-16. With La Salle playing the passing lanes and coming up with steals and easy fastbreaks, they threatened to pull away at 29-20. NU makes a 10-0 run as 3rd string Point Guard Steve Nash Enriquez speed matches up with Nonoy. Half-time score reads 30-29 NU in a low-scoring game. Both imports were quite non-factors as Issa Gaye of NU was injured 3 minutes into the 3rd quarter and he would not come back in the game. La Salle opted to use Bright Nwankwo sparingly and let Baltazar battle it up with NU bigs Geremy Mahinay and Michael Malonzo. It was 43-42 NU after 3 quarters. Nonoy teams up with Baltazar and Cyrus Austria to make a potent inside-outside combo. Back to back baskets by Baltazar at the post makes it 53-49 La Salle. This frees up Nonoy for the crucial 3 and Baltazar cleans up the score 59-55 for La Salle. Nonoy had 13 points, Baltazar 13 and Austria 10 for the Green Archers. For the Bulldogs, Malonzo had 10, Joson 9, Figueroa 9.

Tyler Tio Shoots The Lights Out as Ateneo Clamps Down FEU 79-70

Tyler Tio Shoots The Lights Out as Ateneo Clamps Down FEU 79-70
Tyler Tio shot 4-6 from beyond the arc 6-10 from the field to score 17 points all in the 3rd quarter leading Ateneo to a 79-70 win over FEU. Ateneo dictated the pace similar to their first game, running the floor in the first quarter and led 19-18. They slowed the game in the second quarter although they would shoot early in the shotclock. Ateneo also checked the FEU offense with their suffocating one-on-one defense on FEU scorers like RJ Abarrientos and Bryan Sajonia with Dave Ildefonso roaming on defense like Cholo Anonuevo last time out. Ateneo slowly pulled away ending the second quarter 42-32 with Angelo Kouame asserting his might inside the paint. It was a Tyler Tio show in the 3rd quarter as he suddenly heats up like a microwave bunching up 17 points with jumpers and drives. Abarrientos and Ojuola were making plays for FEU to keep the margin manageable at 67-51 end of 3rd quarter. FEU had one last push in the 4th quarter at 72-66 but Ateneo doused water on the rally. SJ Belangel and Ildefonso iced up the game with baskets and free throws at 79-70. Ildefonso also scored 17 points, Bryan Andrade 9 and Koaume 9 for Ateneo. RJ Abarrientos topscored for FEU with 19, while Emman Ojuola had 15 and Royce Alforque 12.

*Coach's Corner:
I would break the full court defense with two ball handlers and big men helping them with picks after inbounding the ball. It would be convenient if you have bigs who can bring the ball down.

Jerom Lastimosa Waxes Hot Early, Carries Adamson To Victory 82-66

Jerom Lastimosa Waxes Hot Early, Carries Adamson To Victory 82-66

Jerom Lastimosa continued his mantra from the last game, controlling the game, scoring 14 points in 13 minutes as the Adamson Soaring Falcons jumped to a 19-2 start, with some help from Keith Zaldivar who was knocking down 3s. Import Lenda Douanga was such a big advantage at the middle. Harvey Pagsanjan and Aurin Catacutan provided the points for the hapless UE Red Warriors, cutting the lead to 44-26 at half time. The Falcons kept their drive and dish attack with JM Sabandal doing Lastimosa chores. The lead now 34 at its biggest, the count 76-42 after three quarters. Adamson opted to rest their starters with the outcome decided. The second stringers kept the lead at 20, more or less, with the reserves getting playing time. Adamson beats UE 82-66 to barge at the win column. Helping the Adamson cause were Zaldivar with 11 points, Sabandal 8 and Douanga 8. UE were led by Pagsanjan with 17 points, Catacutan 12 and Nico Paranada with a quiet game scoring only 7 points.

Brief History of NCAA Philippines and UAAP

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Philippines was founded in 1924 by Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU), De La Salle University (DLSU), Far Eastern University (FEU), National University (NU), San Beda University (SBU), University of Manila (UM), University of the Philippines (UP) and University of Santo Tomas (UST). Since the Philippines was under American rule at this time, the athletic meet coincided with the US NCAA also now in it's 97th Season. In 1930, UP protested on the league's alleged turn to commercialization. UP bolted out of NCAA Philippines, along with UST and NU and formed the Big 3 League. In 1938, the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) was founded by UP, UST, NU and FEU. The UAAP accepted new members in the University of the East (UE) in 1952 and Adamson University (ADU) in 1970 after probation. Due to brawls and riots in the Games, Ateneo transferred from the NCAA to the UAAP in 1978. La Salle went to the UAAP in 1986 for the same reason. The physicality in the NCAA Philippines basketball games is their legacy up to this day. Jose Rizal University (JRU) joined NCAA Philippines in 1927, Colegio San Juan De Letran (CSJL) 1928, Mapua University (MU) 1930, San Sebastian College (SSC) 1969, University of the Perpetual Help System Delta (UPHSD) 1984, De La Salle - College of Saint Benilde (CSB) 1998, Arellano University (AU) 2009, Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC) 2009 and Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) 2011. San Beda remains the only founding member left in NCAA Philippines and there are rumors they will go to the UAAP.

Over the years, the UAAP rose to become the Philippines top tier amateur league due to better recruitment of talents from all over the country leading other leagues such as NCAA Philippines, CESAFI, UCBL, NAASCU, UCAAP, CSL and BICCS among others. Our Gilas Pilipinas National Team mainly gets its talents from the UAAP, while some NCAA Philippines players also make it.  Some famous NCAA Philippines products in recent years are Scottie Thompson of Ginebra (UPHSD), Robert Bollick of Meralco (SBU), Rey Nambatac of Rain or Shine (CSJL) and CJ Perez of San Miguel Beer (LPU). Junmar Fajardo of San Miguel Beer (UC) and Greg Slaughter of Northport Batang Pier (UV) are products of CESAFI. Then there's also talents from abroad who make it in the amateur leagues, professional leagues and the national team.

Although i said the UAAP is tops, i consider basketball teams like San Beda and Arellano as UAAP caliber as shown from the Fil-Oil Flying V Pre-Season Tournament and the prestigious Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) where all these universities and colleges meet like March Madness. In conclusion, the UAAP should expand and get teams that will make the league more competitive.

Deschon Winston Stars As De La Salle Moves Past UE 71-66

Deschon Winston Stars As De La Salle Moves Past UE 71-66

Deschon Winston is a flashy Fil-American rookie and he moves like a veteran in handling the ball, scoring and backstopping the Green Archers' pressure defense against the import-less Red Warriors. The 6-foot 3 combo Guard scattered 22 points throughout the game. Basically a good tall team beats a good small team. The Archers tall frontline usually gave the Red Warriors only one shot at the basket, pushing them back to shoot contested 3-pointers in which UE had some success. In contrast, De La Salle's size enabled them to get more offensive rebounds and more chances of scoring. When the duo of import Bright Nwankwo and Justine Baltazar sit out, it was the Phillip brothers, Fil-Americans Benjamin and Michael, who patrol the paint. UE stayed in the first quarter with stellar plays from Onzo Lorenzana and Nico Paranada, trailing La Salle 22-15. In the second quarter, Evan Nelle and Cyrus Austria carried the scoring cudgels for La Salle. They lead at the half 47-31 with doubling defense and trapping with Winston at the helm. It was more of the same in 3rd quarter, La Salle with the press and they would score on easy layups while UE was making desperation shots as the shotclock winds down. UE matched La Salle's press defense in the fourth quarter and made the game interesting. It looks like the Archers were tired. Still it doesn't look like UE will steal the game from DLSU even with Harvey Pagsanjan and Clint Escamis picking up the slack. UE rallies at 65-61 and 70-65 one minute left in the game. Baltazar made one free throw and UE throws the ball away and De La Salle goes away with the victory 71-66. Aside from Winston's 22 points, Baltazar wound up with 12 points, Nelle 11 and Nwankwo 10. UE's scoring parade was Nico Paranada with 13, Pagsanjan 13 and Lorenzana 11.

Dave Ildefonso Impresses in Ateneo Win Versus UP 90-81

Dave Ildefonso Impresses in Ateneo Win Versus UP 90-81

Dave Ildefonso was making plays, scoring and hustling for Ateneo while naturalized import Angelo Kouame was the anchor at the paint, Rafael Verano the postman and SJ Belangel hit the big shots when UP was making a comeback late in the 4th quarter. The Blue Eagles and the Fighting Maroons started like a house on fire attacking the basket at every oppurtunity on one-one-one and fastbreak plays. Ateneo's hot shooting from the outside earned them a 13-3 lead in the first quarter. The gap ballooned to 20-5 with the Maroons making turnovers while the Eagles get easy points by passing the ball around. CJ Cansino provided the scoring and hustle UP needed as they cut the lead to 26-18 at the end of first quarter. The second quarter saw the game slowed down as both teams opted to use picks or screens. However we didn't see that much of plays like pick and rolls, pick and pops or pick and passes. Diouf came to play in the second quarter but Ateneo kept them at bay 46-35 at halftime. In the third quarter, Ateneo was still pushing the ball hard pouncing on the poor transition defense by UP. It was here the Blue Eagles posted the biggest margin at 71-53. The Fighting Maroons threatened to come back at 85-78 with two and a half minutes remaining so Ateneo has to send back Kouame into the game. Belangel took charge, scoring a wide open 3 and a deuce to frustrate Cansino and Carl Tamayo who had an off-day. Game ends at 90-81. Ildefonso leads all scorers for Ateneo with 19 points. Verano 18, Kuoame 11, Belangel 10 and three more with 5 points or more. Cansino tops the scoring for UP with 21 followed by Diouf with 15, Tamayo 13 and Ricci Rivero 11 who had a relatively quiet game.

Ernest Felicilda Shines In NU 71-69 Win Over Adamson

Ernest Felicilda Shines In NU 71-69 Win Over Adamson

Ernest Felicilda calms down the nerves of the NU Bulldogs amidst a furious assault by Jerom Lastimosa in the 4th quarter to eke out a 71-69 grind it out win over the Adamson Falcons. It was a balanced attack from the Bulldogs which had 9 players scoring 5 points or more. Both teams have a deliberate approach on the game, following their motion offense. The Bulldogs outside shooting and fastbreaks have them leading in the first canto 19-13. The Bulldogs then slowly built a 10-point lead at the half 38-28. NU has to move the ball around as Adamson has a tough interior defense mainly because of import Lenda Dounga who had 5 blocks in the game. Rookie Didat Hanapi was the lone bright spot for the Soaring Falcons who was breaking ankles and scoring while his teammates were not hitting open 3s. In the third quarter though, Lastimosa and Joem Sabandal woke up and hit from outside that from a score of 48-34, Adamson drops a 10-0 blast that made the game close up to the end game. Lastimosa summoned his old folks to become the 4th quarter man. He kept the balls to himself and drove to the basket. The Falcons were briefly successful as they led 62-59. However the Bulldogs were not going away. They matched the Falcons basket for basket. The Falcons' Vince Magbuhos and Ricky Perominga missed 4 crucial free throws in the last 3 minutes or so. Felicilda, Jake Figueroa and import Issa Gaye connived with timely hits to beat Adamson 71-69. Felicilda finished with 14 points while teammates RJ Minerva and John Lloyd Clemente had 8 tallies apiece for the Bulldogs.  Hanapi had 20 points, Lastimosa 18, Sabandal 11 and Douanga 11 for the Falcons.

RJ Abarrientos Stamps Class as FEU Drubs UST on UAAP Season Opener 76-51

RJ Abarrientos Stamps Class as FEU Drubs UST on Season Opener 76-51

RJ Abarrientos came off the bench in the first quarter and sparked a 19-0 blast that saw the Tamaraws lead 28-9 alongside the hustle of Cholo Anonuevo, sniping of Bryan Sajonia and the inside play of Nigerian Emman Ojuola enroute to a 47-18 halftime lead. Abarrientos was dishing, making pull up shots and driving like he did for Gilas Pilipinas National Team. Playing without an import, the Tigers were content on shooting 3s from their tall shooters - a legacy of former Head Coach Pido Jarencio. However Jordi Gomez de Liano and company were missing. It's either they were not squared up for the shot, they were contested or just plainly missing. Slotman Dave Ando has this amusing teardrop shot from 15 feet but he could very well develop a set shot from that range. In third quarter, FEU posted their biggest lead at 30, score at 58-28, with their deep bench. With the pressure gone, UST showed at last their game - Point Guard Joshua Fontanilla attacking, Nicael Cabanero slashing and shooters like Sherwin Concepcion making better shot selections. The Tamaraws coasted to a 76-51 without big man Ojuola. Abarrientos paced the Tamaraws with 18 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists, while teammates Sajonia added 12, Ojuola 8 and high-flying Rodel Gravera 6. The Tigers were led by Fontanilla with 19 points while Cabanero added 12 and Concepcion 7.

Quarterfinals Review and Analysis:

Monday, March 28 Quarterfinals Date

Quarterfinals Pairings:

*Cignal HD vs BaliPure

*Choco Mucho vs PLDT

*Creamline vs Chery Tiggo

* Petro Gazz vs F2 Logistics

(*- Twice to beat advantage)

1. Cignal HD vs Balipure

Cignal HD has excellent scoring skills, blocking and has improved floor defense. Balipure is 0-3 this conference. It might be asking a lot if they can upset the 4-0 Cignal HD.

2. Choco Mucho vs PLDT

Choco Mucho has rebounded well from a tough loss against Cignal HD and showed character in a grind it out win versus F2. They are leveling up. It would be a major upset if PLDT gets a huge scoring boost.

3. Creamline vs Chery Tiggo

Creamline has good spiking skills and that would be tested against a good blocking team like Chery Tiggo. Yeah Creamline is not the best blocking team out there but they find ways to win. Throw out the stats in this match-up. It really can go either way.

4. Petro Gazz vs F2 Logistics

Petro Gazz is a relatively young team while F2 Logistics is battle tested. Petro Gazz have poor floor defense despite the second seeding and F2 Logistics can capitalize on that. However if Petro Gazz can get its scoring going, that would even things out. F2 Logistics looks tired. This break will be good for them.

Black Mamba Army (eliminated)

Black Mamba Army has to build upon some of their good pieces and skills to prepare for the next conference. If It's any consolation, they are good at receiving and one time, ranks among the best in spiking and digging. Honey Royse Tubino is a positive sign there with her scoring so build a team around her. They will be stronger when Jovelyn Gonzaga comes back.

Team Review and Analysis:
1. Cignal (3-0) has scoring skills and blocking - the first line of defense that can turn into offense. Digging has vastly improved but they should do better in reception.
2. Creamline (3-0) ranks first in Spiking percentages but they are so and so in other categories. They have to improve their digging and blocking. If not, deflections can work as much as block when you recover the ball and score. It's one of those intangibles in the game.
3. Petro Gazz (2-1) leads in serving and is at the middle of the field in most categories. They have to improve digging where they rank last and receiving.
4. Choco Mucho (2-1) dips down after their first loss. Digging, blocking and spiking should come back,
5. F2 Logistics (2-1) has good floor defense shown in their digging and receiving ranks. They have to improve blocking and spiking.
6. Chery Tiggo (1-3) has good spiking and receiving. They have to improve serves and i guess clutch.
7. PLDT (1-2) has good digging but surprisingly they are poor in reception. They also have to improve scoring, set up easy points in spiking.

8. Balipure (0-3) ranks the lowest in almost all categories. Blocking has improved. They just have to level up to win against the top seed of Pool A.

9. Black Mamba Army (0-3) has good floor defense. They have to improve scoring and blocking.
