Open Letter to FIBA

Fédération Internationale de Basket-ball (FIBA)

Greetings Gentlemen, Ladies:

I am a basketball scout from the Philippines and I would like to ask the status of Filipino-Americans Jordan Clarkson and Jalen Green who we would love to see play for our Gilas Pilipinas National Team as locals. The Philippines base it's citizenship from Jus Sanguinis or the Right of Blood so if your grandparent is Filipino, you are a natural-born Filipino as compared to a naturalized Filipino. Others countries like the United States derive citizenship from Jus Soli or the Right of Soil. I understand that FIBA Rules state that players should have a passport of their country of origin at 16 years old. We are not sure if the players in question have acquired Filipino passports at age 16. However they are FIlipinos at birth as stated by the Philippine Constitution. I hope you reconsider our case.

Sincerely,

Luis Voltaire Guzman Castillo

Zavier Lucero Lifts UP Over FEU

April 9, 2022
Zavier Lucero scores career-high 27 points, including 16 points in the 3rd quarter, as UP outduels FEU in crunchtime to win 83-76. With time 1:53 left in the game clock, Lucero hits a crucial 3-ball to make it 76-70 UP which was answered by Xyrus Torres 3 76-73 UP. LJ Gonzales spits his free throws to make it 76-74. However a Carl Tamayo follow-up layup makes it a 78-74 cushion for UP. FEU makes a costly turnovers and that was the game. Ricci Rivero scores on an and-1 drive for the final score.

Ateneo Soars Past UST, Continues Undefeated Run

Ateneo Soars Past UST, Continues Undefeated Run

Ateneo dismantled UST 91-80 as they get help from bench players. Ateneo led 10-5 in the 1st quarter as Dave Ildefonso make a fastbreak layup. Triples by Tyler Tio and Chris Koon made it 25-12 Ateneo. Paul Manalang and UST cut the lead at 27-19 end of 1st quarter. UST also went to their second unit as Miguel Pangilinan hits a 3-ball to come within 6 of Ateneo 36-30. Ange Kouame and Joshua Lazaro combined to make it 50-34 Ateneo end of 2nd quarter. UST makes a 9-0 run at the start of the 3rd quarter until a Koon drive quelled the rally 52-43 Ateneo. It was a 3rd quarter showdown as Ateneo matched UST point for point thus it was still 74-58 Ateneo. The Blue Eagles led as much as 24 points in the 4th quarter where Tio scored 8 straight points at 82-58. From then its just a matter of keeping UST at bay as Ateneo cruised to victory. Tio led Ateneo with 20 points and Bryan Andrade 10. UST was led by Sherwin Concepcion with 22 and Manalang 10.

La Salle Outsteadies Adamson In Grind-It-Out Game

La Salle Outsteadies Adamson In Grind-It-Out Game

It was another close game for Adamson (1-6) versus La Salle (5-2) this time and yet again they come up short. Deschon Winston scored on a drive with 1 minute left in the game as La Salle wrestled the lead at 56-55 then Evan Nelle hits a clutch 3 with 35 seconds left in the game clock, pushing La Salle to a 4-point cushion at 59-55 before Keith Zaldivar cuts it at 59-58 with a 3 of his own. Joaqui Manuel hits a couple of pressure-packed free throws to make it 61-58 La Salle. Zaldivar's 3-point shot attempt was blocked by Justine Baltazar as Adamson's endgame woes continue. Adamson hung with La Salle in the 1st quarter as it ends at 15-all. Lenda Douanga, Jerom Lastimosa and Didat Hanapi provided the scoring as usual. Kurt Lojera scored 8 points in the 2nd quarter as La Salle leads 30-26 at the half. La Salle still leads after 3 quarters at 45-42. It looked like a deflated La Salle team out there as Adamson seizes the lead in the 4th quarter 47-45 and at 53-49 with Cedrick Manzano and Dounga scoring from inside. However Winston, Baltazar and Michael Phillips scored baskets as La Salle claws back. Manuel led La Salle with 14 points, Nelle 12 and Winston 10. Adamson was led by Lastimosa with 15 points, Douanga 11 and Joem Sabandal 10.

NU Vanquishes UE With Avalanche of Points

NU (4-3) scored in bunches as it took the fight out of UE (0-7) early enroute to a 77-61 walk-in-the-park victory. An Antonio Joson 3-pointer made it a 8-0 NU lead followed by 2 triples from John Galinato pads the lead of NU 14-2. UE weakly answered with baskets from Clint Escamis and Aurin Catacutan. A layup by Ernest Felicilda made it 22-5 NU while Jeremy Cruz cuts the lead 22-9 NU at the end of first quarter. NU led as much as 30-11 with a Reyland Torres layup and 38-13 with Torres again hitting a 3 and making 2 free throws. The half ended at 44-21 NU leads.

Triangle and Two napag-usapan natin sa depensa. Isa itong give and go ngunit may screen pa silang ginawa.

RJ Abarrientos Hits Winning Shot As FEU Steals Game From Adamson

RJ Abarrientos Hits Winning Shot As FEU Steals Game From Adamson

FEU (3-3) trailed Adamson (1-5) throughout the 4th quarter and was trailing 54-62 with 3 minutes left in the game before the Tamaraws unleashed a 12-3 blast to end the game at 66-65. RJ Abarrientos hits the game-winning 3 with 20 seconds left while Jerom Lastimosa missed another probable game-winner on a 3-point shot attempt. The game started slowly with both teams playing deliberate basketball. First quarter ends at 13-9 FEU leads. Lenda Douanga was doing the damage for Adamson while LJ Gonzales was heating up in the 2nd quarter. Jerom Lastimosa makes a pull-up jumper for a 28-26 Adamson half-time lead. In the 3rd quarter Abarrientos teamed up with Gonzales while Cedrick Manzano holds the fort for Adamson. The Tams still lead 46-43 end of 3rd quarter. The Soaring Falcons then dropped a 8-2 bomb at the start of the 4th quarter and they led FEU since. Gonzales and Xyrus Torres kept the torch alive for FEU until they clawed back with a Gonzales layup at 63-62 before Lastimosa made a 3-ball to make it 65-62 Adamson time down to 20 seconds before the Abarrientos shot. The Tamaraws' charge were led by Abarrientos with 19 points, Gonzales 16 and Torres 13. Lastimosa led the Falcons with 16, Manzano 12 and Douanga 10.

Ateneo Clobbers UE Following A Lazy Start

Ateneo Clobbers UE Following A Lazy Start

Ateneo (6-0) was gamely exchanging baskets with UE (0-6) in a 39-all first half then they got serious. With Ange Kouame imposing himself inside the lane, Ateneo beats up UE 94-72. Captain Ball Gian Mamuyac was spark this time when he scored 13 straight Ateneo points in the 3rd quarter as the Blue Eagles led 61-53. UE's scoring was sputtering at this time with Ateneo closing down their shooters from outside. Ateneo's bench also contributed as Joshua Lazaro scores on a fastbreak layup to make it 73-60 Ateneo. It was then Kouame again showed his might inside the paint, and together with SJ Belangel, they brought down the finishing touches to the game. Mamuyac and Koaume led Ateneo with 21 points each while Dave Ildefonso and Belangel both had 8. UE had Kyle Paranada and Harvey Pagsanjan scoring 15 points apiece.

NU Routs UST After A Big Third Quarter Run

NU Routs UST After A Big Third Quarter Run

NU (3-3) puts its head down and went to work on defense in the third quarter holding down UST (2-4) to a measly 9 points as the Bulldogs ran away with the win 82-51. Both teams played uninspired basketball in the first half, albeit sloppy at times. Probably feeling the effects of playing 3 times a week in a cramped schedule rather than having 1 or 2 games a week. John Lloyd Clemente's 5 straight points closed out the 1st quarter for NU 16-13. The slowed down play of NU continued where Reyland Torres thrives the best hitting 3s and making driving layups. NU leads UST 35-31 at the half. Shaun Ildefonso's gritty play inside the paint gave NU a much needed push as it slowly built a 53-40 lead in the 3rd quarter on a crest of a 19-0 blast NU led 60-40 to end the quarter. The Bulldogs cruised in the 4th quarter outscoring the Tigers 22-11. NU's balanced attack, which had 9 players scoring 5 points or more, was led by Torres with 12 points, Jake Figueroa , 11 and Ildefonso 10. UST was led by Nic Cabanero with 11 points, Sherwin Concepcion 10 and Paul Manalang 8.

La Salle Loses Steam In UP Fourth Quarter Fightback

UP gets the better of La Salle 61-59 holding them scoreless in the last 2 minutes. UP also went scoreless in 4 possessions in that stretch and they were lucky La Salle wasn't able to take the game into overtime with a last second missed shot from Michael Phillips. Zavier Lucero was the best player who scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, with a couple of sensational dunks. Together with Carl Tamayo, it was a frontcourt showdown against Justine Baltazar and M. Phillips. Bright Nwankwo received little playing minutes while Malick Diouf was rather a non-factor on both ends of the court. It was a back and forth game in the first quarter as both teams were neck and neck at 17-all, characteristic of a defensive game. La Salle and UP would run with opportunities but they cannot pull away from each other. La Salle led 35-28 in the second quarter after Evan Nelle heats up from outside while CJ Cansino hits a couple of 3-pointers. Tamayo scored 5 straight points to make the game 35-32 La Salle still leads at halftime. Lucero and James Spencer picked the slack for UP who was missing the scoring of Ricci Rivero. La Salle makes it 48-45 after 3 quarters with M. Phillips scoring at the post and Mark Nonoy making layups. Lucero was exchanging baskets with the La Salle squad in the 4th quarter making jump shots, drives and follow-up layups. Lucero capped the 8-0 UP run with a 3-ball the score 57-54 UP leads with 4 minutes left in the game. M. Phillips scored on a follow and Deschon Winston hits a 3 and La Salle comes within 2 of UP at 61-59 time two minutes left. La Salle would come up short. UP was led by Lucero with 21 points, Tamayo 9 and Cansino 9. Baltazar led La Salle with 13 points, Nelle 13, M. Phillips 9 and Nonoy 9.

Halimbawa may mataas o may magaling mag-drive.

Ateneo Musters End-Game Composure Versus Resilient NU

Ateneo Musters End-Game Composure Versus Resilient NU

Ateneo had a precarious 67-64 3-point advantage with 2-1/2 minutes left in the game against the tough NU Bulldogs. The Blue Eagles summoned the heroics of Dave Ildefonso, Gian Mamuyac and Rafael Verano who combined for the 7-0 salvo that ended the game 74-64. Ange Kouame was in his usual reliable self leading the team with 12 points. 10 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals and 8 blocks - just missing a rare triple-double. In the first quarter, Koaume and SJ Belangel opened up the scoring for Ateneo while John Lloyd Clemente and Reyland Torres produced the points for NU. Ateneo leads NU 20-14 in the first quarter. The second unit carried the teams in the second quarter, with Tyler Tio, Geo Chiu and Jose Mendoza chipping in for Ateneo while Mike Malonzo, Patrick Yu and Ernest Felicilda contributes for NU. The speed picked up a notch in this highly-competitve match-up, Ateneo still leads 41-33 at the end of two quarters. In the third quarter Koaume and Tio continued the Ateneo onslaught while Clemente and Torres keep plugging away for NU. It was 58-50 for Ateneo going to the 4th quarter. Suddenly NU rallied behind their press defense to come within 60-59 and at 63-61, the Bulldogs were on the crest of 9-3 run. Ateneo answered scoring 4 straight points to make it 67-61 time 4 minutes left in the game. Torres hits a 3-pointer to make it 67-64 however Ateneo had a final push to win the game. Ildefonso paced Ateneo with 14 points, Koaume 12, Belangel 11 and Tio 8. Torres was the high-point man for NU with 14 points, Clemente 12 and Felicilda 10.

FEU Rides Hot-Shooting of Xyrus Torres, Routs UE

FEU Rides Hot-Shooting of Xyrus Torres, Routs UE

Xyrus Torres scored 26 points on 8 of 15 3-point shooting as FEU (2-3) routs cellar-dweller UE (0-5) 88-74 to break it's 3-game losing streak. Torres hits 3 of 3 3-pointers early as FEU leads 9-0. With Emman Ojuola patrolling the middle, RJ Abarrientos, LJ Gonzales and their deep bench, it's just a matter of time when FEU will pull away. FEU led 20-6 after the first quarter. The token defense were expected to bloat the stats of the players. FEU led 40-22 at the half. Harvey Pagsanjan and Clint Escamis were the usual backcourt tandem for UE. So the game is like a scrimmage with both teams running up and down the floor, taking the first open look and not fouling. Pagsanjan tried to make a fight out of this but FEU has so much firepower they allow UE only one shot taking care of defensive rebounds. FEU leads after 3 quarters 57-45. UE cuts the lead 60-50 with 9 minutes remaining but Torres picked up from where he left off in the first quarter hitting 3s and FEU  clinched the win. Torres led FEU with 26 points, Ojuola 18 and Gonzales 13. UE was led by Pagsanjan with 23 points and Abdul Sawat 8.

UP Escapes With A 73-71 Win As Jerom Lastimosa Misses At The Buzzer

UP Escapes With A 73-71 Win As Jerom Lastimosa Misses At The Buzzer

In the most thrilling game at UAAP Season 84 thus far, Jerom Lastimosa missed an open 3-ball at the buzzer enabling UP to escape with a 73-71 win over Adamson. Lastimosa, with help from Cedrick Colonia and Cedrick Manzano, has built an early Adamson lead at 11-4. Malick Diouf and Ricci Rivero were the bright spots for UP while Adamson bigs Lenda Douanga and Keith Zaldivar were waxing hot. Adamson led 22-13 after the first quarter. Diouf continued his hustle on scoring on fastbreaks and follow-ups. CJ Cansino hits a 3 and Zavier Lucero inside, UP scores in bunches quickly to cut the lead at 29-24 Adamson. The Fighting Maroons have tied it up on the half at 39-all with a 15-7 run as the triumvirate of Diouf, Cansino and Lucero were scoring. Lucero started the 3rd quarter attack with 6 points as UP led 48-42 before Douanga and Lastimosa teamed up to make the game close at 55-53 UP still leads after 3 quarters. Lastimosa scored 4 points in a row as Adamson leads 58-55 at the start of the 4th quarter. It was Tamayo's turn this time to step up for UP as he 6 scored points, UP leads 63-60 with only 6 minutes left in the game. UP's trapping defense was highlighted by the turnover on Joshua Yerro the score 70-66 with 1:50 left on the game clock. Yerro make up fo r the error as he scores in a drive making 73-71 UP only 30 seconds left. UP missed a shot and Adamson gets the ball back with 7 seconds left. Douanga then sets a wide screen that freed Lastimosa for what could have been the winning shot. UP was led by Lucero's 20 points followed by Diouf 16, Tamayo 11 and Rivero 10. Lastimosa scored 18 points for Adamson, Douanga 16 and Zaldivar 14.

DLSU Clamps Down UST Shooters With 75-66 Win

DLSU Clamps Down UST Shooters With 75-66 Win

DLSU (4-1) bounced back from the Ateneo loss with a new offensive look outclassing UST (2-3) with a score of 75-66. Justine Baltazar was the focal point of La Salle offense posting up or making spot-up shots. Together with Michael and Benjamin Phillips, La Salle now have high-low plays as the big men converge at the paint. Of course UST is shorter but its a glimpse of what La Salle can do against stronger teams. Baltazar opened up the scoring for La Salle with 5 straight points at the post and at rainbow country. Baltazar would not stop there. Shooter Emmanuel Galman suits up for La Salle for the first time this season and hits the 3-pointers. Joshua Fontanilla, Nic Cabanero and Christian Manaytay would score for  UST but La Salle leads 23-16 end of the first quarter. With DLSU closing down on the shooters of UST, Fontanilla and Cabanero have to drive and dish. Baltazar keeps the inside outside threat going, this time La Salle fielded in shooters Kurt Lojera and Cyrus Austria. The La Salle defense has pressured UST scorer Sherwin Concepcion into passing the ball. It was 42-27 at the half. UST's 3-point shooting has the La Salle lead into 46-37 until Lojera heats up with drives to the basket. La Salle's stifling press defense, their offense humming and Michael Phillips cleaning up the boards, they lead as much as 19 points at 58-39. The 3rd quarter ends at 61-44 with UST big man Bryan Santos hitting a 3-ball. 4th quarter was when Cabanero and Fontanilla were most aggressive driving inside they cut the lead 65-56 with 6 minutes left in the game. It looks like UST has another rally in them at 71-62 with 3 minutes left in the ball game when Manaytay missed on a breakaway drive. It proved a costly miss as Baltazar scored on a post-up play and La Salle pulls away at last. Baltazar scored 20 points for La Salle while Lojera added 15, Galman 13 and M. Phillips 8. UST was led by Fontanilla with 20, Cabanero 20, Manaytay 9 and Santos 9.

1. Jump Shot 80%
2. Fade-away Shot 5%
3. Driving Lay-up o Dunk 15%

Parang bread and butter move mo yan.

1. Mag-dribble gamit ang sampung mga daliri.

2. Hawakan ang bola sa may itaas at igiya mo sa direksyong nais mo.

9. Ipasa ang bola.

Creamline Cool Smasher vs Choco Mucho Flying Titans Semifinals Head-to-Head

Creamline leads 1-0 in Best of 3 Semis

Head-to-Head

Setters:

Creamline - Jia De Guzman

Choco Mucho - Deanna Wong

Both are/were National Team players and De Guzman is not old. Both setters are in their prime and are experienced. Wong may be the better blocker and better digger but I'll give De Guzman a slight advantage in setting. It comes down to familiarity and chemistry.

Wingers (Open Hitters /Opposite Hitter):

Creamline - Alyssa Valdez, Jema Galanza, Diana Mae Carlos

Choco Mucho - Isa Molde, Des Cheng / Ponggay Gaston, Kat Tolentino

The Creamline core have been together for sometime now so I'll give them chemistry. In blocking, Choco Mucho may have the advantage but if the shorter wings of Creamline can deflect the ball for easy digs and receive, it's worth as much as a point. I'll give the digging advantage to Creamline because tall players like Tolentino have difficulty digging the ball. Unless she plays like 4T of Vietnam in defense. When it comes to scoring, who can kill the ball more effectively? I'll give the slight advantage to Creamline because they are consistent. Choco Mucho has Tolentino but their Open Hitters should improve.

Middle Blockers:

Creamline - Jeanette Panaga, Celine Domingo

Choco Mucho - Aduke Ogunsanya, Bea De Leon / Cherry Nunag

The Creamline MBs received solid playing time while for Choco Mucho, they toggle between BDL and Cherry Nunag in addition to Aduke Ogunsanya. I'll give the blocking advantage to Choco Mucho and scoring to Creamline.

Libero:

Creamline - Denden Revilla

Choco Mucho - Kyla Atienza

I'll give the advantage to Creamline because Revilla has the experience over Atienza in digging, receiving and setting.

Overall it's not much of an advantage for Creamline because chemistry is instantaneous. Choco Mucho can get that so this makes them dangerous because they are the taller team.

Ange Kouame Lifts Ateneo Past De La Salle

Ange Kouame Tows Ateneo Past De La Salle

Ange Kouame scored 16 points, hauled down 19 rebounds and swatted 2 shots to keep Ateneo (4-0) undefeated inspite of the La Salle (3-1) inspired fightback. In the battle of unbeatens, it was a question of whether La Salle can match Ateneo's firepower. Kouame went to work early as Ateneo race to a 13-4 start. Michael Phillips relished the challenge from Koaume and energized the game for DLSU and basically was everywhere hustling, rebounding and scoring. However Ateneo's frenetic pace stunned La Salle, the Blue Eagles lead 30-19 in the second quarter before M. Phillips hustled time and again, and with the help of Mark Nonoy and Evan Nelle, they trimmed the lead to 35-32 at the half. In the 3rd quarter, Ateneo's 23-13 outburst  capped by back-to-back 3s by Tyler Tio and Kouame post plays made it a 68-45 ballgame. Dave Ildefonso, Gian Mamuyac and SJ Belangel have also contributed heavily for Ateneo, scoring and doing the intangibles. Basically, it was Ateneo's guards vs La Salle's bigs. However La Salle did not get the usual contribution from Justine Baltazar and the attention from defense he makes. That really spelled the difference. Ateneo wins going away as they starched La Salle 74-57. Koaume scored 16 points, Ildefonso 12, Mamuyac 11 and Belangel 8 for Ateneo. M. Phillips tallied 13 points, Nonoy 12 and Nelle 10 for La Salle.

*Coach's Corner: Ateneo's delaying of the outlet pass have prevented La Salle from scoring easy points on the fastbreak.

Paul Manalang Hits 5 Treys As UST Surprises Adamson

Paul Manalang Hits 5 Treys As UST Surprises Adamson

Paul Manalang was the extra punch UST needed as Adamson was at their heels chasing. Manalang scored 15 points in the 3rd quarter on 5 of 7 shooting from rainbow land as UST doused icewater on Adamson rallies to win 79-72. UST's game plan is simple, find the open man and shoot the 3. They have the personnel who shoots 3-pointers from guards like Joshua Fontanilla and Nicael Cabanero to bigs like Bryan Santos and Dave Ando. They frustrated Adamson throughout the game who were missing point-blank range shots and were shooting contested shots thanks to the Tigers' perimeter defense. UST's high-point man Sherwin Concepcion hits from 3 early, while for Adamson pounded it on the paint to import Lenda Douanga, Keith Zaldivar and Joem Sabandal. UST leads 19-16 at the first quarter after a Jordi Gomez de Liano 3. Douanga carried Adamson in the second quarter while Vince Magbuhos connects outside but UST still leads 45-41 at the half. Jerom Lastimosa wasn't exempted on those frustrations as he has missed open layups. In the end, not even the patience of Adamson can win this game. UST lived and died with the 3, they were victorious again this time. Manalang scored 15 points, Fontanilla 10, Santos  9 and Cabanero 8 for the Growling Tigers. Lastimosa and Douanga had 16 and Magbuhos 8 for the Soaring Falcons.

UP Makes Easy Work of UE

UP Makes Easy Work of UE

UP (2-1) one of the strongest teams on paper, showed why it is being touted as a contender early in the season as they move past UE 81-66. Zavier Lucero scored for the Fighting Maroons as the Red Warriors were searching a messiah. Or messiahs. It seemed that way though when Kyle Paranada, Harvey Pagsanjan and Clint Escamis teamed up for a 15-2 run in the fourth quarter to cut UP's lead to 73-64. However UE ran out of time and UP runs away for the final score. Ricci Rivero, Carl Tamayo and CJ Cansino were the constants day in and day out for UP as they were relaxed facing a winless UE (0-3) squad. Rivero opens up the scoring with a 3 and UP never looked back after that. They surged on for a 31-13 lead in the first quarter and the cushion would be enough for the rest of the game. UP led as much as 29 points the score 48-19 before a 13-2 UE run trimmed the lead to 50-32 at halftime. UP built up big leads in the 3rd quarter outscoring UE by 30 points several times. UP held on until that UE fightback in the fourth quarter. Lucero had 14 points, Rivero 14, Cansino 10 and Tamayo 8 for UP. Escamis had 16 points, Paranada 13 and Pagsanjan 12 for UE.

RJ Abarrientos Resets UAAP Season-High Scoring Record In FEU Loss To NU

RJ Abarrientos Resets UAAP Season-High Scoring Record In FEU Loss To NU

RJ Abarrientos hits his stride in the first 3 quarters scoring season-high 33 points mainly from 3s erasing Sherwin Concepcion's previous high of 25 points. However this was not enough to contain the NU Bulldogs in the 4th quarter. NU dumped it inside where their veteran bigs outhustled their FEU counterparts. RJ Abarrientos started the game hitting a 3 but unfortunately for FEU, they were not hitting 3s in the 4th quarter. JL Clemente scored inside and outside while Michael Malonzo, Shaun Ildefonso and Robert Minerva were battling for the boards and getting free throws and Ernest Felicilda hitting from 3, the Bulldogs come back from a 58-38 3rd quarter deficit to tie it all up at 65-all  with 2-1/2 minutes left in the game. The rebounding tenacity of Malonzo gave NU the lead and capped the game with an 8-3 salvo. Import Issa Gaye didn't play much who was recovering from injury while FEU didn't capitalize on the advantage of Emman Ojuola inside. Clemente scored 18 points while Malonzo added 14, Ildefonso 13 and Minerva 9 for the Bulldogs. Following Abarrientos 33 points were Royce Alforque 13 and LJ Gonzales 9 for the Tamaraws.
