RJ Abarrientos Stamps Class as FEU Drubs UST on UAAP Season Opener 76-51

RJ Abarrientos Stamps Class as FEU Drubs UST on Season Opener 76-51

RJ Abarrientos came off the bench in the first quarter and sparked a 19-0 blast that saw the Tamaraws lead 28-9 alongside the hustle of Cholo Anonuevo, sniping of Bryan Sajonia and the inside play of Nigerian Emman Ojuola enroute to a 47-18 halftime lead. Abarrientos was dishing, making pull up shots and driving like he did for Gilas Pilipinas National Team. Playing without an import, the Tigers were content on shooting 3s from their tall shooters - a legacy of former Head Coach Pido Jarencio. However Jordi Gomez de Liano and company were missing. It's either they were not squared up for the shot, they were contested or just plainly missing. Slotman Dave Ando has this amusing teardrop shot from 15 feet but he could very well develop a set shot from that range. In third quarter, FEU posted their biggest lead at 30, score at 58-28, with their deep bench. With the pressure gone, UST showed at last their game - Point Guard Joshua Fontanilla attacking, Nicael Cabanero slashing and shooters like Sherwin Concepcion making better shot selections. The Tamaraws coasted to a 76-51 without big man Ojuola. Abarrientos paced the Tamaraws with 18 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists, while teammates Sajonia added 12, Ojuola 8 and high-flying Rodel Gravera 6. The Tigers were led by Fontanilla with 19 points while Cabanero added 12 and Concepcion 7.
