Avatar: The Dark Side of Pandora [2011]

AVATAR AND BEYOND SERIES

AVATAR: THE DARK SIDE OF PANDORA

Chapter One – THE MYSTERIOUS DISEASE

AN 8-FOOT NA'VI MALE swings one-armed on a tree branch, makes a full rotation and somersaults upwards into the sky. He landed perfectly feet first on the ledge-like platform near the base of the branch. It's Jake, wearing the ornate necklace for an Olo'eyktan [Chief], his eyes then fixed on a huge tree approximately 80 meters high at some distance away. He feels the branch vibrating beneath his feet.

Jake: (without looking) This is it, this is our new home!

The petite figure of Neytiri appears and follows Jake's gaze.

Neytiri: (clutches his hand) Yes it will be.

Moments like this, there is little to be said between the two of them.

ITS BEEN TWO MONTHS since “The Great Battle” Pandora, -------- its been two months but Pandora is by binary system of stars which makes the day night

ON THE PLAINS, where the Omaticaya settled after the "Great Battle", there is a already a semblance of their former life. Hunting, fishing, cooking, everyone is doing whatever chores they have in the past.

A couple of Na'vi kids giggle as they run and disappear into the woods. The metallic clank and hydraulic sounds of the Amp suit combine as it chases the kids. The elder Na'vi turns around to see what its all about and smiles.

Norm: I'm coming!

Norm now mans an Amp suit with relative ease – he can be forceful and yet be gentle at the same time. The People have grown fond of him with his help to bring order to the chaos and especially the kids. Make-shift dwellings Well, Norm is kind of like a kid at heart too.

One of kids slows down to a halt and began to cough incessantly. He cups his hand over his mouth and becomes wide-eyed in horror at what he saw – blood.

The incident marks the start of the epidemic that plagued the Omaticaya people.

JAKE AND NEYTIRI have now reached the top of the core trunk of the new Hometree. He sits on a corner with a serious look in his face. The events that transpired within the past month come back to him, flooding his mind with a wave of emotions.

FLASHBACK. The day after the fateful day, all are busy mourning and burying their dead. Mo'at and the People have relented to having the dead humans buried underneath for health reasons. Normally, the Na’vi let their dead in the hollow of the dead tree trunks. The place that was Home-tree is now ground zero lined up with plots and crosses.

JAKE SIGHS as he remembers that another ISV Venture Star will come in two years. The RDA surely will back. But he is more concerned on the more pressing problems at the moment. Norm and Max have been invaluable to him.

Neytiri is watching him.

Neytiri: What's troubling you? The Skypeople… they coming back?

Jake: (smiles wryly, gently caresses her face… and then he sees blood coming out from one of her nostrils.)

AT THE LAB, Max and Norm are testing the blood samples.

Norm: Every one of the people is infected except Jake. His having human DNA can be the reason.

Max: We have yet to see the results but I think Jake's blood have antibodies to fight this mysterious disease. And that's another thing, the disease; we don't know what's causing it.

Norm: The People are dying. And even if we know the antibody, Jake's blood won't produce us sufficient cure for all the people.

AT THE TREE OF SOULS, Jake kneels down praying to Eywa, his queue attached to 3 vines from the tree. He saw visions of a sea creature and a tree with white flowers.

Jake: Did you see that?

Neytiri, her queue also linked to the vine, nods.

Neytiri: It is dugong, the sea friend, you must ride it to get to the Ilang-Ilang tree. That tree is only found in the underwater caves.

Jake: Du-gong?

Neytiri: A sea creature that swims like no other and like ikrans, you will choose your own dugong and he will choose you.

Jake: (Talk about déjà vu) How will I know if he chooses me?

Neytiri: He will play with you.

Jake: Hahahahaha you gotta be kidding me.

Neytiri: You'll see. We must go to the Southern seas and meet the dugong riders and seek their help. They know the way to the underground caves.

Jake: Stay here, you are not well.

End of Chapter One.

Chapter 2 – THE DUGONG AND THE DUGONG RIDERS

AT A BLUE LAGOON, dolphin-like creatures are bonded with the Na'vi playing like a water polo game, in a game of 5 against 5. A large crowd of Na'vi gathered at the picturesque crest of the cliffs. The rule of the game is passing the ball (in this case a fruit like a coconut) to a teammate until they reach the end zone mark where they drop the ball to basket there. If a player drops the ball to the water, ball possession is awarded to the opposing team. Loud cheers are heard when a spectacled Na'vi rushes forward and intercepts a pass. He goes on to face a huge goalie at the end zone (only goalies are allowed to tackle the opposing player).

Crowd: (in Na'vi) Go Bal'tog. Nice one Bal'tog.

Bal'tog maneuvers left and right, and left again, faking with his dugong, the goalie is thrown offguard. He tries to keep up and jumps at the rushing scorer. Bal'tog sees him coming towards his left side. He grits his teeth, crouches, and puts his weight on his right side, traps the ball between his body and the animal as the right arm clutches tight to the queue. He extends his left arm thumping the goalie's chest which pushes him away and he goes down hard into the water. Bal'tog drops the ball uncontested to the ring.

Bal'tog: (grins) Game over!

Crowd: (Sounds of applause)

Their attention is distracted by oncoming group of Na'vi flying in their banshees. Bal’ tog, the young chief, looks up in anticipation.

Seeing the chief, Jake and 2 other warriors directs their banshees to where Bal'tog now sits resting.

Jake: Oel Ngati Kameie, Bal'tog, chief of the dugong riders.

Bal'tog: (in Na'vi) Oel ngati kameie, I have heard of you, Toruk Macto. I'm glad we finally meet. I would have joined you in the battle… How can I be of service to you?

Jake: (in Na'vi) Oel ngati kameie, call me Jake Sully, I am no longer Toruk Macto. But there is not much time; our clan is need of a cure, fast. I'd be very much obliged if you can show me the way to the underground caves… and the Ilang-Ilang tree?

Bal'tog: (keeps on nodding) Ok Jake Sully, my men and I will show you the way, but first, you must get your own dugong. It is the only way.

Baltog waves at his men.

AT THE DREAM GATE (as re-named by Max)

Max: Jake is talking about a dolfinus, the dugong, Grace has done some minor research on Pandora's sea creatures. If Jake successfully captures a dugong, he must pass through a series of underground tunnels and caves. It's easy to get lost in there. Sector 99.

Norm: Look at these tunnels and side tunnels.

Max: (points to a circular area) This is the place right here, the little sunlight that passes through the cave, that why the tree thrives in there. But something is blocking the entrance to the caves, last time I checked, it's not there.

Norm: We better tell Jake about it… but how, I have lost contact with him in hours ago.

Max: Well, there is something you can do about it… I've seen you control the Amp suit… follow me.

Norm follows him to an adjoining the lab room, and sees a Proto-type Aqua suit, basically works the same as the Amp suit, except for some controls.

Max: It won't be a piece of cake but I think you can manage.

Jake: Wow! But this tree, you think is the cure?

Max: We must try; the lives of the People are depending on it.

BACK AT THE BLUE LAGOON

Bal'tog: (in na'vi) Jake Sully, the dugongs are extremely fast swimmers and they are very smart. They are not dangerous but if you want to want to ride one, they will play with you until he is bored. It will take days, sometimes weeks. I got mine after two days.

Jake swims towards a group of dugongs. He spotted the one with reddish freckles. He smiles as it break away from the group and goes toward him. Jake tries to get close to it, but it runs off towards another direction. Half an hour later, he could not even get within five meters from it. As Jake remains inactive, the dugong goes underwater again.

Jake: (whistles using his hand) I haven't got all day for this! TONTO!

Jake's banshee [dragon] came out of nowhere and lowers its tsaheylu [bond]. Jake grabs it and in one fluid motion, gets at its helm and went away.

The dugong resurfaces and looks around to see where his playmate is at. Its face seems quite perplexed. After a while, convinced Jake has left, the dugong swims away leisurely.

CLOSE-UP on the dugong swimming underwater, sea plants and other creatures are to be seen. It surfaces again to breathe when it feels a strong thud on his back. Jake iron-grips its tsaheylu and makes the bond immediately.

Jake triumphantly raises his left hand and heads back toward the chief. Bal'tog shakes his head in disbelief and points his finger to Jake, the entire clan cheers for him.

Bal'tog: (in Na'vi) Incredible, no wonder he successfully captured a toruk.

AT THE SOUTHERN SEAS, Jake, Bal'tog and 5 more riders, navigates at the seemingly endless ocean. Bal'tog raises his hand when he saw the distinct grayish-red rock formations. Down below is the entrance to the caves. Bal'tog and his men dives into the water.

Bal'tog: (resurfaces, talks to Jake) There are boulders blocking the cave. Let's see if we can move them.

All of them took turns but to no avail, it won't even budge.

A huge white figure appears behind them.

Norm in Aqua suit: Am I too late for the party?

Jake: Norm, you came just right on time! Hurry! We have no time to lose.

The Aqua suit goes down under water and surveys the boulders.

Norm in Aqua suit: Scanning… rock thickness 1 meter, rock 1.2 meters, rock 0.70 meter… No problem!

The Aqua suit levels its cannon at the rocks and starts to blast away.

End of Chapter Two.

[UPDATED JULY 22, 2018]

Chapter 3 – THE ILANG-ILANG TREE

BAL’TOG SHOWS the way to Sector 99 with ease. He knows it like the palm of his hand. Soon they stand in awe of the magnificence of the Ilang-Ilang Trees, it’s breadth and height and large roots. The fragrance is intoxicating. The cave sits on an estuary which means freshwater mixes with seawater. Norm saves the passage on his waze. We will take the leaf samples.

AT THE LAB there is it the antibody same as in Jake’s body. The tree is of earthly origin. Max is examining the pictures. No doubt about it. Some explorer might have dropped seeds there. The question is is this the cure? Neytiri steps forward. I volunteer.

End of Chapter Three

Chapter 4 – THE LEGEND OF THE PHOENIX

AT THE BLUE LAGOON the dugong riders are still talking with gusto. From a distance they gestured how Jake captured a dugong. Bal’tog retreats wearily in his cave. It is lit with light bulbs along the way. He dusted off the dirt in his sandals on a doormat and enters his command post. His men are on the computers. Any good news? None of immediate concern. But in case you wanna know the banshees gathering on the Omaticaya Hometree have flown away. As you know hours after the burning of the hometree, banshees (ikrans or dragons) relished on the ashes. I’ve always wanted to ride one. I would get my own ikran. He looks around and saw furtive glances. They are comparing me with Toruk Makto. I have my ways. The Dugong Riders were also educated by the Skypeople but they were predecessors of the RDA. It was here in these same quarters that they study Pandora and teach their old folks. The quarters are actually part of a pyramidal structure that later on camouflaged by earth and vegetation. His late father thought it best to hide the base. But as he withdraws in his room, he is pondering whether it was wise. He began to read for the nth time his favorite childhood story. The legend of the Phoenix.

AT THE LAB the test results are encouraging. Neytiri felt better. The epidemic will be contained. Max has delegated the duties to Norm and his trainees. His mind lingering on the phenomenon he has witnessed. The banshees eat ashes. It is not mind boggling as what natives would say. Humans take charcoal as medicine to diarrhea.

Chapter 5 – GENESIS

FLASHBACK. Max was working at Pfizer as a Physician when the news of the discovery of Pandora came about. He was ecstatic as he was also an amateur Physicist so when the RDA announced that they are sending an expedition to Pandora he updated his resume and applied for a Physician’s job. There were no opening for such but he can work under Dr. Grace, a Biologist and Oceanographer, among others. He did not mind the demotion. He wants to go to Pandora. The theory of Panspermia was proven correct. Life has the same building blocks anywhere in the universe. NASA narrowed their search to blue planets as the signature of life avoiding Hydrogen-Helium gas planets for they may catch fire. Thus Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune and Uranus are known as sleeping Dwarf Stars. There was a new Space Race. Knowledge has advanced exponentially and man is on the steep ascent. They developed water-powered engines. The next fuel developed is Iodine primarily for Interstellar travel, in addition to liquid oxygen, nitrogen tetroxide, and hydrogen peroxide. Oil, gas and batteries powered by lithium, cobalt, nickel and manganese remains the supplemental power source. They developed jet planes that have thrusters designed for vertical landing. Drone-like Helicopters. Rockets launched time and again into space. They send telescopes farther into space to take pictures of exo-planets - planets outside the Milky Way solar system. Pandora was named after the story of a little girl who opens up a whole new world. It comes as a surprise to scientists that a binary star system would have elements to sustain life. At first the pictures they saw were vegetation and plant life. Later on images of mobile living creatures. What was that animal? Is human-like. They were later on dubbed as the Na’vi. The same building blocks states that irregular-shaped single-celled matter evolved into symmetrical creatures, four-legged animals and ultimately bi-pedals like us. The Na’vi stands 8ft to 10ft. The thin oxygen atmosphere explains the blue tinge of their skin. Like fishes have gills to inhale oxygen from water, the Na’vi have adapted to the mainly nitrogen atmosphere. Theoretically humans can breathe Pandoran air through staggered training. Say one minute of inhalation. Then you go to the Decompression Chamber. Nitrogen is harmful to the blood stream. But if the results will be positive they will gradually increase the exposure. For now the Avatar Project is promising wherein they grow Na’vi humanoids combined with the human DNA from test tubes. The human donor has the capability to transfer his or her consciousness to the Avatar. The art of mind control. Or stealing. The soul of the test tube baby Na’vi is displaced. The Science of Metaphysics is relatively in its infancy stage. In layman’s terms the study of ghosts, ghouls, phantoms, specters, spirits, doppelgangers, angels and demons portrayed in films such as Ghost, Insidious and Flatliners. Psionic Technologies Inc. interviewed those who have experienced blackouts, near-deaths and those who came back from the dead. They do not know what is out there. They come up with an experimental Psionic Link wherein the subjects go through blackouts. The Link allows the human controller to take over the Na’vi body. They probably communicated on the other side. The ISV Venture Star has been transporting humans to Pandora. It is where star ships dock. An outrageous and rather gargantuan task when they build the ISV Venture Star in space. It measures one mile in length. The first explorers brought home the mineral known as Unobtainium. It has properties to make structures weightless. It’s theoretical applications are radical - from manufacturing flying machines to building floating islands. The RDA would gamble on this technology. Max has to go to Pandora. He was leaving his family behind but he wants to live the dream of a lifetime.

MAX REPLACES the picture frame on the table showing him and Grace. He takes another one. His wife and his three children. His crazy wife smiles good-naturedly. He remembers when they read this crazy book Baby-making For Professionals© written by an obscure writer. It was her gift to him on their wedding day. He reached for the drawer. “We’re so doing this, Love lots Margie” the dedication on the book reads. The appendix has illustrations of the Kama Sutra.

End of Chapter Five

Chapter 6 – BAL’TOG AND HIS QUEST

BAL’TOG HUNTS for the manticore, the fiercest predator he has ever seen. To capture it patience would be his middle name.

Chapter 7 – THE PHOENIX RISES

THE GRAY MONSTER SPITS fire that steadily burns whatever is in its path. The jungle is enveloped by thick smoke.

Chapter 8 – BAL’TOG VS THE AMAZONS

Chapter 9 – THE SECRET OF THE PHOENIX

AT THE LAB. Max throws Jake a durian fruit. Take a look at this. The fruit splits open revealing its section. The juicy fruit is enclosed by thick shells thereby fermenting the contents. It smells alcohol. The dragon practically stopped by a gin mill and sprayed napalm! Do you know how did it ignited the fire? The dragon swallowed stones! You know sparrows? Those little birds that bounce around, they swallow stones to grind their food. I guess birds will be birds. No seriously Jake. What do we do about it? The dragon has been burning hectares of land on several cases now. Like wildfire.

NEXT STORY

AVATAR: THE RDA RETURNS

Mirror, Mirror [Book Review]

Four teenagers have formed a band named Mirror, Mirror in their music class. Red (real name Amy) the queer goth, Naomi the anime lover, Leo the punk and Rose the diva meet in their weekly assembly. Red is the storyteller of the story, middle class, has a philandering father and an alcoholic mother, Red takes care of her younger sister Gracie. Naomi is Red's best buddy like her mirror and it is with her disappearance that the story revolves around. Naomi has been kidnapped and left for dead at the river. The doctor prescribed an induced coma so that the swelling would subside. With this the band mates and their family has their future at a standstill while they try to uncover the mystery what happened to Naomi as they deal with issues of their own. Rose the most popular girl in school has been date-raped at fourteen. She masked this now at sixteen she never told anyone except Red. Leo is the brother of Aaron who is famous at school for getting in jail for stabbing. He takes after his brother. It was a frustrated homicide case. But the band mates they come together to solve who kidnapped Naomi. Her older sister Ashira is a world class hacker and together with Red they captured the culprit. Mr. Smith the music teacher was the perverted criminal.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars. The writer Cara Delevingne arranged the chronology of this Young Adult story by time periods, like the chapters are jumbled into 8 weeks ago, 1 year ago, 9 hours ago and so on. Its kinda confusing you know but its supposed to be read as is. As i figured later. I read it chronologically which is i read the earliest history 1 Year Ago when they formed a band. What happened to Rose which was divulged 10 months ago is a big deal. She was gang-raped so i was expecting the issue be considered in the succeeding chapters. The details were on the first chapters if you know what i mean. I would have reiterated the panorama every now and then. Not excessively as necessary. That is the style of the late Robert Parker Jr. who churns out 3 novels in one year. He has passed away but still has backlog stories to this day. I'm saying you could do better Cara. Me look at my writing in 2011. Avatar and Beyond. I'm kind of a novice too.

Moana The Musical [Review]

Moana a bubbly fair skinned girl 16 years of age lives in the island of Montanuwi somewhere in Oceania where the reef is teeming with seafood and the land blesses them with livestock, coconut and crops. As the village chief's daughter she is privileged to get a chicken as pet. When the produce becomes scarce they think of alternative sources of food. She always cling to her grandmother who lulls her to sleep with the legend of Dafete the creator of heaven and earth who nourishes humans.

The Demi God Maui known for mischiefs and strife decided he steals the heart of Dafete so he can create on his own. He pulls islands out of the bottom of the sea and lassoes the sun so that the days be longer. His body is a tapestry of works and conquests. However a malevolent God known as Tekar punishes him with lava fireballs. Maui became isolated on the island.

Moana jumped on a canoe to sail beyond the reef but was met with big waves. Brave as she is she was shipwrecked backed to the island. She tells her father they got to sail away but he was adamant that they stay. Truth is he cannot sail if his life depends on it. Grandma knows this so she sends Moana to the cave of the ancestors. Inside it are canoes, boats, ships, oars. They were voyagers the ancients told them in a vision. The food scarcity becomes worse. The reef was overfished and the farm either saturated with saltwater or became deserts. Desertification happens to the soil due to overfarming the soil is devoid of nutrients. It is now urgent for Moana to help her village.

With newfound gusto Moana sets out to sail with her pet chicken. She would look for Maui the one who can tell them where Dafete lives and restore her heart. Dafete's heart was kept by her Grandma passed through generations of safe-keeping to be given to the chosen one. Moana has found Maui on a faraway island. He is definitely is just a man with extra-ordinary skills. Big, strong, wily and mobile. But he is lost without his choice weapon the hook made of cast-iron. He lives on the fruits and vegetables he gathers. Reluctantly he agrees to take Moana to see Dafete but first Maui needs his hook in case he encounters the hostile Tekar. His clue they would find it at the bottom of the ocean where Sponge Bob Squarepants lives. He collects shiny things. Moana distracts the crab while Maui recovers his weapon. Alas the hook was no match for the crab's steely claws. In exchange for their freedom Moana hands the crab the heart of Dafete.

Dejected Maui frowns that he lost his guile. Moana has given the fake heart but how would he fight the lava monster Tekar. Now they are being attacked by a pirate ship Captain Jack Sparrow at the helm. He took a liking to Moana's chicken. Moana fiercely send them back to their ship. Maui knows she protects her loved ones but he cannot help her in the quest. Not without his hook. He bids Moana adieu.

Moana sailed on for Maui has taught her how to sail. She has a weapon nobody knows. Tekar is the nurturing God Dafete! The God turned bad when Maui stole her heart. If she can find a way to tell Tekar that Maui is sorry for what he did she can restore her heart. Tekar was still spewing lava from a distance. Out of nowhere, Maui in the form of a bird tries to take on Tekar. He tweets to the God. Tekar has accepted his apologies and allows Moana to put her heart in place. Dafete has come back! The God blesses Moana and fashioned a new steel hook for Maui. They bid each other goodbye.

At Montanuwi Moana comes home to see that the fishes have come back and the land has replenished itself.

Ma-yi: The Land of Nine Kingdoms

Ma-yi is a large mass of land in a forgotten world. Some 11,000 years ago the North Pole is the United Kingdom and Ireland while Australia is the South Pole. Ma-yi is an island continent bigger than Australia. Mount Apo is the highest peak while the foot of the mountain range nestles at the Marianas Trench. The nine kingdoms that encompass the Ma-yin power extends up to East Asia which was near the equator. The ninth kingdom is Siam which is derived from the Ma-yin language Siyam which means nine or ninth. An asteroid has hit the earth that causes its rotation to destabilize. The world has come to be what it is now.

The Mayins practise Hinduism, Buddhism and Animism. The tri-metropolis of Luzon (Lusong, Song Dynasty), Visayas and Mindanao is the seat of the Mayin power. Other kingdoms to the west and east are: Brunei, Palau and Zealandia (the supposed submerged continent near New Zealand). Source: Philboxing

The Scent Of The Green Papaya 1992 [Movie Review]

The year was 1951 in Saigon, Vietnam. It was hot but the heat was bearable. Mui a servant girl at age ten has lost her father three years ago and has to help her family with their finances. The household has an irresponsible master and a kind mistress. Time and again the master has left off with their savings to spend on women. The mistress welcomes him home wholeheartedly whenever he does so. The last time he steals the jewelry from the safe he has a heart attack. The mistress lovingly tends to him as he died. There was an old servant who showed Mui the way. When money was scarce they eat the green papayas grown at their backyard.

Ten years later Mui was twenty years old. The mistress has passed their clothing and embroidery business to one of her sons who has a wise wife. She says they raise livestock at their compound and let go of Mui. The mistress was distressed cause she reminds her of her daughter who passed away.

Mui was sent to a friend of theirs who is an eligible bachelor. The musician lives alone and was kinda wealthy. She was supple. They were kind of set up but he has a fiancee. You know women can seduce without them noticing so they fell for each other. The fiancee calmly gives back the engagement ring after smashing the place. The musician gives Mui a book that tells of the green and yellow papayas. He taught her to read and write. Then she goes to pick the green papaya and cook for her husband.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars. The green papaya is the symbol of trying times. The musician knows he can be disowned by his family, friends and business partners by the rejection of his fiancee so he teaches Mui so she can up her status. They believe they can do it. I noticed that they julienne the green papaya but after few scratches from the surface they throw the rest of the papaya away. We eat all the green papaya here you know.

Lumayo Ka Man Sa Akin 1992 [Movie Review]

Lumayo Ka Man Sa Akin (That's Why You Go Away) is a poignant tale of love and deceit. Raul (Richard Gomez) and Stella (Gretchen Barretto) are sweethearts who grew up in a poor fishing village. They struggle to make ends meet as Raul's father is a notorious gambler while Stella's sickly mother dreams of riches so she despises Raul. Their lives took a turn when Raul's father gambled away their house and fishing boat. Raul pleads at the gambling host to reconsider but he was denied. He started a melee and killed him in self defense. Raul now a fugitive tried to get Stella to elope but she has her mother to take care of. Raul goes into hiding in Palawan where his boating skills did not go unnoticed. Jaime (Johnny Delgado) is a big player in the industry. He has legit business while he buys politicians and moonlights as a drug dealer. In an eventful ambush Raul saved Jaime's life and was taken into his inner circle. One day they go to Jaime's house where Raul found out that Stella has married the big man. They made forbidden love and was discovered by the bodyguard Brixio (Jess Lapid Jr.) The bittersweet story ends in the nipa hut at a desolate place in San Mateo, Rizal. Raul kills Jaime and his hoods as the nipa hut burned. When daybreak came Raul and a wounded Stella walks toward the sunrise.

I love the story okay but the screenplay can be improved. I love the performances by the actors and actresses. I can understand that Jaime entrusted Raul his wife Stella. It was him who saved his life. They could of developed their life at the village and how Jaime met Stella. How they married and Stella's life. How could they be allowed a separate chalet? Stella was supposed to be with her bestfriend Lisa (Shirley Fuentes). A pillow talk with her cousins Chona (Mutya Crisostomo), Betchay (Precious Hipolito) and Nikki (Karen Timbol) was in order. I would love to see how Brixio trained Raul in guns and martial arts. I can also understand that Stella knows where Raul is being held prisoner. They probably frequented the safehouse.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars. Raul and Stella might have been childhood sweethearts but she claims to love Jaime which was some time after Raul has gone away. Thank God i was not Raul. He has committed a capital crime and should be imprisoned. You know guys if you ask me there wouldn't be a second love if you did not forget the first love. Neither there will be third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh... Love is perennial as the grass my friend. Strive to be happy.

Taking Care of the Homeless

The Homeless People are those not capable of supporting themselves nor live independently so they need help. They have no family, neglected or abandoned. They can be old and young as babies. The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is the government arm who help them but there are Non Government Organizations (NGOs) who help in their own way. There are also private individuals who help in whatever way they can.

Their programs should eventually make the homeless a vital member of society. One initiative that is worth emulating is the Villar Sipag Foundation a brainchild of Senator Cynthia Villar that alleviates poverty in the communities with livelihood programs and skills training and seminars.

UAAP Season 80 Women's Volleyball

As the season goes on, teams should look back at the goals they set. Are you going for the championship or are you in a rebuilding phase? What is your system? Are you going for player development? The best way to motivate players aside from lovelife and family is by money. You play good in college you get hired as professionals playing the game you love and getting paid handsomely for it. I have devised a new substitution pattern. Every set is 25 points unless it gets extended so i play my starters from 0-10 points. The idea is for the subs to contribute in the important parts of the game so they should add to the lead or rally the deficit from points 11-16. The finishing lineup plays the points 17-25.

1. Adamson University (AdU) Lady Falcons

The Lady Falcons has to bank on Gemma Galanza's heroics to edge FEU yesterday. They are now at an even 1-1 slate. Good things happened when Mylene Paat was moved as MB to OPP her natural position. In fact Paat comes off the bench at Cignal to replace Jovelyn Gonzaga and she sometimes upstage her. But being a starting OPP is something Paat must work on. Soyud as fans claim can play the MB so Dacoron should take her under her wing and she'll be fine as substitute player. Anyway in my opinion a team needs 10 competitive players in their rotation. Lea-Ann Perez is undersized at the MB position but she has the skills. Drop balls. What does an MB do to drop balls? Work on reflexes. Help the MBs too. Emnas has done a good setting job. Permentilla should work on accuracy. Who else will step up for the Lady Falcons?

2. Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) Lady Eagles

Bea de Leon the MB is today's Player of the Game in their first win. Her game is alright but she gets blocked a lot. She needs to read the defense and vary her attack. Aside from spiking, make floaters/lobs and sliced shots. Their MB2 Maddie Madayag is also a decent blocker. As i have said MBs should improve their reflex motions on the hands and feet. Refer to my twitter for the reflex trainer. Jhoana Louisse Maraguinot has not received enough passes yesterday. Probably that was the game plan. If not i'm calling you out Deanna Wong. It is okay to get blocked. When a teammate gets blocked the best leaders would let themselves get blocked, brushes it off and play again. Kat Tolentino is a tall OH which makes her a target of spikes. Which eases the burden on the libero Dani Ravena. I suggest you do 10,000 egg rolls. You know to get rid of vertigo. Jules Samonte is fearless. Ponggay Gaston is a spark on and off the bench - a role that she must always personify. Who else will defend the floor for the Lady Eagles?

3. De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Spikers

I do not see any team in the league stopping DLSU. At least in the first round of the eliminations. They have ice water in their veins developed from their championship titles. This season Kim Kianna Dy looks to lead DLSU to another championship ring while Majoy Baron, Desiree Cheng, Aduke Ogunsanya and Tin Tiamzon provide the firepower. Dawn Macandili is her usual busybody self. Michelle Cobb should rise to the pressure of being the setter of the defending champions.

4. Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws

FEU looks good on paper but they need composure to gut it out with the better teams. Ha Bernadette Pons is magic. FEU's floor defense is holding up but they need to step up their blocking. Otherwise the floor defense can be overworked. They seem to have found the right combination. Chin Chin Basas, Negrito, Guinoo, Domingo and substitute players Cayuna.

5. National University (NU) Lady Bulldogs

Watch out for NU as their rotation becomes solid. I know its easy to look good against a lowly team like UE but games like this boosts your confidence. NU played not to lose against FEU and they lost. I would't say overconfident but they trying out new plays bringing in new players in the rotation. As it was Paran's absence in the first set has NU's defense wobbly. Drop shots after drop shots were dropped on them with Urdas and the bigs the primary targets. This said this was a welcome loss as NU will have time to address their weakness. Singh and Doromal need to step up to help Jaja Santiago, Jasmine Nabor, Sato, Paran, Urdas, Ponce and the rest.

6. University of Santo Tomas (UST) Golden Tigresses

UST playing without EJ Laure and the addition of OH Milena Alessandrini has them adjusting. They have short MBs Shannen Palec, Tin Francisco, Caitlyn Viray their best blocker. The disadvantage in that is their second, third, fourth jumps wouldn't be as high or as quick as their first jump. But if they summon their fighting spirit and timing that would even up the competition. Cherry Rondina is a scoring machine but she has to improve her defense - at the net and the floor defense. Carla Sandoval is a more defensive OPP but her offense needs to improve. Make floaters okay. Milena Alessandrini no doubt is a gem. Alina Bicar should take charge. Who knows one game can bring them back to their groove.

7. University of the East (UE) Lady Warriors

Shaya Adorador can hold his own as a starter for Generika. UE turns a new leaf with a new coach in Rod Roque. Outgoing Coach Francis Vicente would be invaluable as President of Volleyball Operations due to his savvy and knowledge. Me-ann Mendrez is the co-captain of this team. She should hit harder though. Their setter should set up the MBs as well so as to be unpredictable. I know Baliton is the captain playing as an MB now. But she is a trained setter. I'll play her as setter but she needs conditioning to get the lift for blocking and help in the floor defense too. Seth Rodriguez is their best MB while Mikaela Lopez should get the lift too. I'm glad Kat Arado has gotten her groove back. Judith Abil is a breath of fresh air. She needs variation in her attacks - spikes, floaters, you get the idea.

8. University of the Philippines (UP) lady Maroons

I'm impressed with UP on how they dig and receive during warmups so they just gotta get used to the pressure. Make heady plays on defense to pump the offense. Make heady plays on offense to pump the defense. Make it work. Tots Carlos needs to stop her jump serves to conserve her energy. The purpose of the serve is to score aces or to force easy overs. Her jump serve does not do that. Other than that Carlos is the most feared spiker this year. Speaking of serves Molde, Buitre and Layug has them scoring easy points. Their blocking needs improvement while they wait for Ramos.

Fantasy Volleyball

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen as discussed i have analyzed the stat sheets and i have come up with comments and suggestions. As you can see UST won over UE 3 sets to none 25-17, 25-15, 25-21. UST scored on 40 spikes, 6 blocks, 3 service points and 16 opponent errors for a total of 75 points while UE gets 27 spikes, 3 blocks, 7 service points and 16 opponent errors for a total of 53 points.

However the spikes and digs does not add up. UST has 105 Attempted Spikes as compared to UE's 107 Attempted Digs. That is why we have to break down the categories to balance the equations. These Spikes can be separated into Spikes that can be dug and Easy Overs that can be received. You dig the spikes. We consider the Serves as a Reception stat even though there are spike serves. So Easy Overs and Serves can be received. The block is unique in Volleyball that it is both an offensive and defensive move. Let us consider that you dig the blocks.

Spikes Made + Spikes Dug + Spiking Errors = Spikes Attempts.

Yes i used to burn the midnight oil in Fantasy Basketball that is why i want the same in Fantasy Volleyball. Those guys my main men Jim Park, Dennis Scott, Brent Barry, Topex Robinson, Goomboo and the Tumeke Club.

Easy Overs
Made + Received + Errors = Attempts

Serves Made + Received + Errors = Attempts

Blocks Made + Blocks Dug + Blocking Errors = Block Attempts

Digs, Receptions and Sets are non-point stats. We can call Excellent Sets simply as Assists.

*Of course there might be gems that i missed, wish the NCAA has a second round elamanations. I look forward to seeing these girls play again in pocket tournaments or in the PVL Collegiate Conference.

By pocket tournaments i mean schools can organize blitz tournaments in their locality. Say Letran, Mapua and Lyceum can battle for the Intramuros Cup. We the PLM do not have a team yet so they can invite teams across the Manila City Hall - Adamson, RTU, TUP and PNU. The Taft Volleyball Cup can include DLSU, CSB, PWU, PCU and so on. The Morayta Volleyball Club can include FEU, UE, UST, NU, JRU, AU, SBC, SSC, CEU, etcetera. The Diliman Cup can include UP, ADMU and NEU. They can invite San Lorenzo University to join. You get the idea.

Spotted PUP students watching the NCAA, they have a large student base i know. Did you know their Pangkat Kawayan musical group tours around the world to promote PUP and the Philippines? They are akin to special athletes.
